Home Heating Safety
Accidents with heating equipment are the number one cause of all home fires. Most of these fires could have been prevented with proper understanding and use of heating equipment. Here are some tips that will reduce the chances of a fire in your home.
• Electric space heaters need at least three feet of space all the way around. • Electric space heaters should be plugged directly into outlet (no extension cord). • Turn space heaters off when you leave home or go to bed. • Electric space heaters should shut off automatically if tipped over. • Have your chimney inspected and cleaned by a professional chimney sweep. • Never use gasoline or other flammable liquids to start a fire in a wood stove. • Use a fireplace screen that covers the entire front of fireplace to catch stray sparks. • Ashes should be removed from the fireplace and put in a metal container with a lid. • Ash can should then be placed outside away from the house and other combustibles. • Never use a charcoal grill indoors, it gives off deadly carbon monoxide gas. • Never use kerosene heaters indoors; it is illegal to sell them for indoor use. • Have an annual checkup of your central heating system to assure it is in good condition. • Keep a fire extinguisher in an accessible location in case of an accidental fire.
